Talk about a tongue twister. But trust me homemade almond butter is a lot easier to make than that title is to say. There is something very satisfying about making your own food and this nut butter is no exception.
Now I know nuts and nut butter can get expensive, especially if you are looking at all of the brands that add in some of the extra yummy ingredients like hemp and chia.
Not to mention buying a new jar every time you need to get more. That is a lot of jars going into *hopefully* the recycle bin. So beyond tasting amazing, by making your nut butters at home you are also taking another step towards a zero waste lifestyle!
How to Make Homemade Almond Butter
Lightly roast the nuts and blend while warm
By roasting the almonds you are bringing out all of the natural oils and flavors that are held within the nuts. This flavor boost alone is worth the extra time you need to take for this roasting process. Even more so having a creamy almond butter without needing to add any additional oils is even better.
Blend, Blend, Blend
Good things take time. Nut butter is one of those things! It will take A LOT of blending before the nut butter is smooth. But fear not it will get there. Sorry if it seems like I'm stating the obvious here, but... Remember to let the food processor or blender stop completely before scraping the edges. You could hurt yourself or the machine otherwise. Oh and the amount of times you need to scrape just depends on how much build up your blender makes! No exact science there.
Add in the Add-ins
This step is optional, but depending on what you are looking for it can be a game changer. Things like chia and hemp are nutrient dense plus have a nutty flavor of their own. Where as cinnamon, honey, and vanilla are nice flavor boosters/sweeteners. Try it all or only a couple You really cannot go wrong here.
Homemade (Superfood Boosted) Almond Butter
Serving Size:
16 oz
Ingredients:
3 c almonds
Optional Add Ins:
2 tbsp Honey (*Keep it vegan - sub maple syrup)
½ tsp Vanilla
½ tsp Cinnamon
2 tbsp Hemp
2 tbsp Chia
Make It:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. While it is heating, spread the almonds in a single layer on a baking sheet.
Roast the nuts for 8-12 minutes until they are lightly browned and slightly aromatic.
Let the nuts cool slightly so they are just warm to the touch and then add them to a food processor or high powered blender.
Blend! This may take several minutes so be patient with it. Pause occasionally to scrape edges and then just keep blending. You want the end product to be smooth and creamy.
Add any optional ingredients, blend a little more, then you are good to go.
Put your fresh nut butter into a clean jar ready for you to enjoy.
